STATESBORO, Ga. – This past weekend the Georgia Southern men's tennis team hosted Winthrop, UNC-Charlotte, and Coastal Georgia. The Eagles would go on to sweep the weekend extending their win streak to four heading into a short week. They will host Gardner-Webb University, Abraham Baldwin, and Stetson to finish off the home stand.
Â
"We had a really good weekend," said head coach
Sander Koning. "We started well against Winthrop and they played really well against us. We were able to get ahead and continue our success to win that one. We have a short week, getting Gardner-Webb and ABAC on Friday and continue this trend. We have some time to recover and we will be ready for Friday."
Â
WINTHROP – On Thursday, the Eagles faced off against the Winthrop Golden Eagles. This would be the start of a six match home stand, spanning the next two weeks. Georgia Southern would go on to defeat Winthrop 4-3 to extend the win streak to two.
Santiago Suarez and
JC Alcala would go on to win their matches in straight sets and get the momentum rolling.
Â
"It was a hard fought match," head coach
Sander Koning said. "Both teams played well and we were fortunate to come out on top. In doubles, we were a little tentative and it cost us the doubles point. In singles we started out really well with two solid wins for Santiago and JC. Stefano was able to close his match out in two sets. The three matches that were still on went 3 sets. Eddie was able to turn his match around and clinch it for us. It is always good to have one of those now and then that we can call upon later on in the season."

Christian Kerrigan and
Diego Finkelstein continued their success as partners in doubles play improving to 3-0 on the season.
Â
"I told the guys coming in that Charlotte was a similar team as Tennessee tech. They just lost a heartbreaker and we expected them to come out with a lot of fire just like tech did. We were able to learn from what we saw against Tennessee Tech and come out more energetic and aggressive. Our number one doubles team came out on top once again, as well as JC, who came back and took his match. Dani was able overcome everything that he has been through and clinch the match for us and I am really happy for him."
