JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia Southern swimming squad opened up the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon with a tri-meet against the University of North Florida and Florida International University at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. The Eagles defeated North Florida, 138-124, while Florida International defeated Georgia Southern, 145-117.
"I was really pleased with how we swam today," Head Coach Laura Thomas said. "Our newcomers really stepped up to the plate and swam as good as they could, they showed me that they belong here. Overall I thought we swam very well as a team. I was proud of the team dynamic and how they supported each other. It was a lot of fun today."
The Eagles had a standout race in the 50 Freestyle, taking 1-2 in the sprint. Freshman Mackenzie Brown captured the race in her first collegiate swim meet with a time of 23.94, with junior Morgan Fleming taking second in a time of 24.60.Â
Georgia Southern took second in nine other events, including strong swims in the 200 Medley Relay as Anna Moers, Bre Stuart, Kaylyn Thomas and Fleming clocked a time of 1:49.02, as well as the 400 Freestyle Relay, where Fleming, Randi Kiser, Moers and Anna Rose Moore swam a time of 3:39.03.
See below for results from all 14 events swam on Saturday.
The Eagles will now have almost two weeks to prepare for their first home meet of the 2017-18 season, on October 20th against Campbell at 5 p.m.
"We're going to be training very hard," Coach Thomas said. "Campbell took it to us last year, so we're hoping we will make a stronger showing this year. We're going to be ready for them. We're also looking forward to the entire campus to come out to the pool for that match, it's a GATA match and our home opener, so I'm really excited to see the support for the Eagles on the 20th!"
