PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii – Steven Fisk shot a 71 but was the only Eagle under par, and the Georgia Southern men's golf team is 16th after the first round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational at Makai Golf Club Sunday.
Louisville (-22) leads the field, and Missouri (-18) is second as 12 teams shot par or better today. Georgia Southern (+8) is ahead of Sun Belt compatriot Louisiana (+9) and four behind Cal Poly (+4) and San Diego. The Eagles are eight strokes behind a three-way tie for 10th.
Luukas Alakulppi posted a 72, and
Jake Storey shot 76.
Archer Price carded a 77, and
Brett Barron shot a 78.
The field features eight top-50 squads, according to Golfstat, including the 32nd-ranked Eagles. Ten individuals are ranked in the top-100 in the country, including Fisk, who is ranked ninth.
The story
Fisk played his first six holes even and moved to 2-under with an eagle on the 540-yard, par-5 5th hole. The junior birdied his 17th hole of the round to get under par for the day.
Alakulppi started a little rocky before posting par or better on 11 straight holes with birdies on holes 3, 5 and 9. The sophomore capped the round with three straight pars.
Storey led the team with five birdies on the day and notched four in a row on holes 3-6 after a tough start to the round.
Quotables from Coach Carter Collins
"We got off to a slow start and never recovered. We feel fortunate that it's an 18-hole day instead of a 36-hole day because now we can regroup and be ready for round two tomorrow."
"We are playing well; just need some momentum. If we do our job, there is a great opportunity the next two days to fly up the board."
Next up
GS is paired with Cal Poly, San Diego and Colorado for tomorrow's second round and tees off holes 10-12 at 8:30 a.m. local time.
