STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team returns home to Eagle Field on Tuesday, hosting Stetson in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest after being away from home the last three matches.
The Eagles (6-7) face their final non-conference opponent in the Hatters (7-5-2), who come in riding a four-match unbeaten streak. Stetson played to a 0-0 draw with fellow Atlantic Sun Conference foe Jacksonville on Friday, while Georgia Southern dropped a 3-0 Sun Belt road decision at Hartwick on Saturday in its last action.
"It's always good to get back home," Head Coach John Murphy said. "I do think we travel well as a team, but having two to three straight games on the road is difficult. I think the mindset of the team is just to get back on the field and play. Everyone's ready to put the last two games behind us, learn from them and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead."
The series against Stetson is one of the tightest rivalries for the Eagles in school history as the two teams have played 27 times previously, with each team winning 12 times and three draws. Last season, the Eagles won a 2-1 decision over the Hatters in Deland, Fla., as both Adam Abdellaoui and Emil Laursen collected goals. Even though two important conference games lie ahead for the Eagles beginning on Saturday, Coach Murphy is adamant that his team will not be looking beyond the Hatters.
"You have to be intelligent in how you play," Coach Murphy said. "We have to put our full attention to Stetson, and show them respect they deserve. They've had a very good season, Kyle [Gookins, Stetson Head Coach] has come in his first year and done a great job. He's got a great pedigree, being involved with all those great Charlotte teams over the years. It's also a great tradition with Stetson, one of our longest rivals, and we know it's going to be a tough game."
The Eagles are also participating in a nationwide "Red Card Cancer" initiative on Tuesday night. Georgia Southern players will be wearing pink shoelaces and socks to help raise awareness for cancer research and free pink cotton candy will be given out to fans. You can still buy tickets for the matchup and the match will be streamed live on True Blue TV, with live stats also available.Â
