Georgia Southern travels to the 33rd annual Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State, this weekend. It's the farthest north the second-year Eagle program has traveled for a tournament. The farthest north the Eagles traveled last season was to Buies Creek, N.C., for the Campbell Fighting Camel Fall Classic in October.
"We are excited to get on the road again and play some golf in the Big 10!," said Georgia Southern coach
Emily Kuhfeld. "It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to continue the progress we have made since our last tournament and a chance to compete against some of the best teams in the country."
Georgia Southern is coming off a second-place finish in the CSU Fall Invitational Sept. 13, while Yeji Shin (-1) and Iben Hvass each tied for third. It was the season opener for the Eagles.
The second-place team finish and third-place individual finishes are the best in the brief history of the program. The Eagles led the tournament with 37 birdies and ranked second in pars with 176. Ansley Bowman fired a school record 69 in the second round, Hvass carded a 70 in the second round and Shin shot a 70 on the final day.
Hvass, Shin and Lauren Coe return to the lineup this week and freshman Julianna Collett, who made her Eagle debut as an individual last week, joins the lineup. Freshman Ella Ofstedahl will see her first collegiate action this week, and Ariana Macioce will play as an individual. Coe tied for 13th at the CSU Fall Invitaional, and Collett tied for 18th.
Hvass has been in the lineup for all 12 tournaments of her Georgia Southern career, while Shin and Macioce will make their 11th career starts.
The Eagles are one of two teams from the South competing in this week's tournament along with Miami.
Following the trip north, the Eagles travel to the Jacksonville Classic Oct. 3-4.
