STATESBORO –
Georgia Southern student-athletes attended the first Eagles in Transition seminar of the year on Thursday, August 18, in the Nesmith Performing Arts Center.

Eagles in Transition is a program designed to give student-athletes the opportunity to learn about how they can prepare for their future outside of school and athletics.  The seminar included guest speakers Darron Burnette, President and CEO of Sea Island Bank, and Mollie Sisson.

Burnette, a Georgia Southern alum, said his hope is to help student-athletes avoid incurring a lot of debt that could hinder them in fulfilling their future dreams and goals.  He gave a background on the bank and its relationship with Georgia Southern and also spoke on managing a budget and how to avoid money pits.

Sisson, the Senior Relationship Manager with Sea Island Bank, focused on retirement and overspending.  She spoke to students about the importance of having a future perspective while spending and investing money.  She talked about the value of investing for retirement and how saving early can help lead to an early retirement.

Associate AD for Marketing and Special Projects Gleen Hart, a former student-athlete himself, spearheaded the evening. "A lot of times [as a student-athlete] you don't think about your financial future until it hits you head-on," Hart said. "I think this information will prepare them for the future. I'm very proud of what we did tonight."

Student-athletes were given tips and tools for how to save their money, balance credit, maximize a budget and even how to start a retirement fund while still in college.  Eagles in Transition is a unique opportunity for student-athletes, and the Athletic Department looks forward to growing this program.

The next Eagles in Transition event will be Tuesday, September 20 when Patrick Combs will speak to freshman student-athletes about majoring in success.
