STATESBORO - Student-athletes are taking initiative in the community this summer and Eagles such as
Emmy Johnson are leading the way with new ideas that help support the local Statesboro youth. Johnson has been a part of the women's rifle team since its inception three years ago and is pursuing her degree in child and family development.Â
In attempt to reach out to the youth in the area, Johnson teamed up with the Department of Juvenile Justice to create a special project for the kids. She created a class where athletes would be able to speak to the younger kids, encouraging them to reach their goals and strive to overcome their current situation. Johnson needed the help of other student-athletes to make this project a success and in true Georgia Southern spirit, they answered the call.Â
Student-athletes such as
Courtney Weekley (rifle),
Sierra Kirkland (basketball) and
Cathrine Murray (volleyball) participated in the class. The kids were able to interact with these outstanding athletes of the University and had a wonderful time hearing the stories shared.
Georgia Southern student-athletes strive to provide great role models and inspire the path toward college athletics for many of the kids who had the opportunity to attend. Johnson's project with the Department of Juvenile Justice highlights just how important Eagle student-athletes are in the community and the impact they have.
