Top Players Returning
After showing improved numbers from 2014 to 2015, the Tigers return senior Arshon Spauling, a wide receiver turned quarterback during the 2015 season. Spaulding led the team in rushing (97-555 yds, 5.7 Avg, 4 TDs) and passing (526 yds, 1TD-6 INTs, 58.4 pct) in nine games played. Junior Tino Smith will return to compete for the starting quarterback position. Smith was injured in last year's season opener at Colorado State. Before the injury, Smith went 6-for-14 for 50 yards, throwing an interception. Senior linebacker Marquis Smith leads returning players totaling 57 tackles in 2015, making 27 solo with 30 assisted. Included in those tackles are 7.0 tackles for loss and a sack, forcing one fumble. Smith also blocked a field goal attempt at Akron which was returned for a touchdown to give SSU a 9-7 lead. Also returning are sophomore Isaiah Bennett (48 total tackles, 2 INTs) and junior defensive lineman Connor Christian (37 total tackles, 1 FF, 3 FR).
