STATESBORO, Ga. - Two long-time Georgia Southern head coaches - Nathan Kellogg of the swimming team and
Kevin Kennedy of the men's soccer team - have resigned their posts within the athletic department to pursue other avenues, as announced Thursday by director of athletics
Tom Kleinlein.Â
"We appreciate all of the time and effort that both Nate Kellogg and
Kevin Kennedy put into making Georgia Southern Athletics better and thank them for all they did," Kleinlein said. "We wish them the best of luck as they pursue other opportunities. A national search is already underway for the new leader of our swimming program and a national search will begin immediately for our men's soccer program."
Kellogg led the Georgia Southern swimming and diving program to one of its most successful eras in school history as Georgia Southern swimmers set 68 school records during the past 10 seasons. He became the winningest coach in program history after the 2011-12 campaign and leaves Statesboro with a 93-52-1 dual meet record. Kellogg was named the CCSA Coach of the Year in 2016 and his Georgia Southern swimmers and divers notched CCSA All-Academic Team accolades for achieving a grade point average of 3.2 or better 116 times since 2008.
Kellogg will join the staff at William & Mary.
Kennedy has been at the helm of the Georgia Southern men's soccer program for 10 seasons and posted 65 wins as the head man. He coached 23 all-conference selections as well as two conference freshmen of the year and one conference player of the year.
Academically, Kennedy's student-athletes have traditionally done very well in the classroom as evidence by his teams earning five NSCAA Team Academic Awards for averaging a team Grade Point Average above 3.0 for the year (2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015). In 2012, his team won the Georgia Southern Men's Team GPA award with a 3.42 team GPA and both his 2014 and 2015 teams won the Sun Belt Team Academic Awards with team GPAs over 3.0.
Â
He has had 30+ all-academic selections in his 10 years of coaching and while Georgia Southern was in the Southern Conference (SoCon), 30 Eagles earned SoCon Honor Roll plaudits, having earned at least a 3.0 GPA.
Kennedy will remain on staff until June 30.
"This is certainly a bittersweet moment for me, as I've been blessed to be a part of Eagle Nation for over 18 years, from my time here as a graduate student in the late '90s to my recent tenure as the head men's soccer coach," Kennedy said. "One of our program's core values is family, and we are extremely invested in building and maintaining positive relationships. With that said, our players were very supportive and understanding of my decision when I met with them. When my wife, Ale, was approached with an outstanding opportunity to return to her alma mater, Clemson University, the draw was simply too strong to resist. I'm thankful for the support that our athletic department has given me and our program over the course of the last several years, and I'm eager to watch our Eagles compete for a Sun Belt Championship in the fall."
