Final results

DESTIN, Fla. – Redshirt senior Henry Mabbett fired a 73 in the final round, and sophomore Archer Price tied for 12th at the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tuesday at Raven Golf Club.

Price shot a 75 today to finish 2-over for the tournament for his fourth top-20 outing of the season. Freshman Steven Fisk and junior Cody O'Toole shot a 76, while sophomore Jonas Vaisanen finished with an 81.

The top four teams after 54 holes of stroke play advanced to match play. Georgia State (-4) finished first and will be the No. 1 seed in match play, while Troy (+2) took second and will face third-seeded Arkansas State (+3). South Alabama (+10) finished fourth. The Eagles (+37) were 11th in the team standings.

Georgia State's first-place finish also gives the Panthers the men's golf point in the Southern vs. State rivalry series. The Panthers lead the series against Georgia Southern 11-5.

The story
The Eagles' struggles off the tee all week continued Tuesday. Mabbett overcame a double bogey on his first hole to make the turn 2-over after carding a birdie on hole 18. He played his final nine holes even par with birdies on holes 3 and 8.

Price rolled in three birdies on the day and was 1-over through 12 holes after making birdie on the par-5 3rd. He tied for fourth in the tournament in birdies and tied for second in par-5 scoring. 

Fisk started his day with six straight pars and was 1-over at the turn. He gave a couple back on his last hole when his approach found the water. O'Toole was 2-over through 11 holes and played his first nine holes 2-over.

"This course is tight enough that if you can't get off the tee, it's going to be a long week, and that's what happened to us. Tee shots have been our Achilles heel off and on this year. It wasn't a lack of effort, it was a lack of execution, and this course carries heavy penalties for missing fairways and hitting the ball in the wrong spot."

On the Eagles' youth this season
"Experience isn't something they hand you as a freshman. It's something you have to earn by getting in the lineup and playing in a tournament setting. We did gain a lot of valuable experience this week and this season, and it's going to be important for this team to use it as motivation moving forward. I know 100 percent this team will do that."

On the season
"We hit a run of bad tournaments and lost some confidence, and confidence in this game goes hand-in-hand with success. We've tried so hard the last few weeks to put that confidence back in their bag, but we just couldn't get there. What we have to do moving forward is play our way out of it. I'm excited about the talent level of the returners we have coming back, and we'll add three good players to the mix for next season." 

Next up for the Eagles
Georgia Southern returns six lettermen, including four who were in the lineup this week. The Eagles also add incoming freshmen Luukas Alakulppi (Valdosta, Ga./Valdosta), Brett Barron (Suwanee, Ga./Lambert) and Alexander DeRosa (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) to the roster.
