STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer Head Coach
Kevin Kennedy announced the Eagles' Fall 2016 regular-season schedule Tuesday morning. The schedule features 18 games, a full Sun Belt Conference slate and six home contests.
"I'm very excited about the schedule that we have put together for 2016, as we will be facing a number of challenging opponents," Kennedy said. "Our 2015 schedule boasted six teams that ultimately made the NCAA Tournament, and this schedule will feature five teams that were in that tournament field. Our out-of-conference schedule will be extremely challenging, but our aim is to prepare the team for the most important part of the season, Sun Belt Conference play."
The 18 opponents on the Eagles' schedule include 14 foes that played in the post season in 2015, including five NCAA Tournament participants as well as the 2015 NCAA Championship runner up.
Following a pair of exhibitions at home against SCAD and on the road at UNC Asheville, Georgia Southern will begin the regular-season with four games on the road. The Eagles will first travel to Houston, Texas for the Houston Baptist Tournament with matches against Houston Baptist and Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday, August 26 and Sunday, August 28. The Eagles will then travel to Stetson on Friday, September 2 and Jacksonville University on Sunday, September 4.
The Eagles will open their home slate on Friday, September 9 against James Madison before hitting the road again for three-straight road games. The first game of the road trek will be on Tuesday, September 13 at South Carolina before the Eagles return to the state of Georgia where they will take on Mercer on Saturday, September 17. GS will close out the three-game road swing by traveling to ACC foe Duke on Tuesday, September 20.
Following the three games on the road, GS will return home for games against North Florida on Saturday, September 24 and Campbell on Tuesday, September 27 before the annual rivalry game against Georgia State. This year, the rivalry game will be contested on Saturday, October 8 in Atlanta and will also serve as the Eagles' Sun Belt Conference opener.
On Wednesday, October 12, GS will return home for a single game against Gardner-Webb and then hit the road once more for a pair of games starting with a conference match on Saturday, October 15 at Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers enter the SBC in all sports except for football in 2016. The Eagles will then travel to Presbyterian on Tuesday, October 18 before heading home for a conference game against Hartwick on Saturday, October 22.
The Eagles will hit the road one final time for a pair of games, including at 2015 national runner-up Clemson on Tuesday, October 25 followed by an SBC match at Howard on Saturday, October 29.
Georgia Southern will close out the regular-season with a home game against long-time rival Appalachian State on Saturday, November 5. The game will be the Eagles' annual Senior Day.
The 2016 Sun Belt Men's Soccer Tournament will be contested in Atlanta with Georgia State hosting the tournament November 10th through the 13th at the GSU Soccer Field.
