NEW ORLEANS, La. – Georgia Southern women's basketball player
Angel McGowan has been named to the Sun Belt All-Conference Second Team as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. The all-conference selections and individual award winners were chosen in a vote by the league's 11 coaches as well as media members covering the 11 teams.
McGowan, a junior guard from Greenville, S.C., is the first All-Sun Belt selection for the GS women's basketball program and picks up the honor just days after scoring her 1,000
th-career point in Georgia Southern's season-finale at Louisiana-Lafayette.
McGowan wrapped up her junior campaign averaging a team-best 14.7 points per game, a mark that has her seventh in the SBC. Her 412 points scored were also the seventh-most by a player in the league this season and are the most points she has scored in a single season in her three years playing for the Eagles. She also led the team with 56 three-pointers, 72 made free throws and 60 steals. Her 60 steals ranks fourth in the Sun Belt while her average of 2.1 steals per game has her fifth. McGowan finished the season tied for sixth in the conference in three-point field goals made per game (2.0) but she was tied for fifth in total three-pointers converted.
With one season left to play in Statesboro, McGowan has already stamped her name in the GS record books and is closing in on several other career marks. McGowan's 181 three-point field goal attempts this season ties the second-most attempts by an Eagle in a single season while her 56 made three-pointers matches the fourth-best mark set by an Eagle in a season. Her 60 steals during the 2015-16 campaign were the fifth-most recorded by a Georgia Southern junior.
She is also currently sixth all-time in Georgia Southern women's basketball history with 388 three-pointers attempted, 11
th in program history with 107 treys converted and her 150 career steals is good enough for 14
th all-time in program history.
