KENNESAW, Ga.- It was a first for many on Wednesday during the away match against Kennesaw State—The first time the Georgia Southern men's tennis team won against the Owls since 2013; the first time
Andre Johnson won a spring doubles match; and the first time freshman transfer
Ze Moya clinched a match.
"I'm really happy to clinch a match for the first time as an Eagle," Moya said. "Overall it was a great team effort both on and off the court. The guys showed support in close situations and it helped us get the 'W'."
On top of clinching the match at the No.3 position, a place where he's only played two times before for GS, Moya also got the ball rolling in doubles play with partner and fellow freshmanÂ
Andre Johnson. However, head coach
Sander Koning agreed that the whole team played a role in the success.
"Everybody contributed and fought hard," Koning said. "Kennesaw has had a solid season and they're a talented team so this win is a good one in my opinion."
The frosh doubles duo (Moya and Johnson) tallied a 6-3 win at No.3, where sophomores JCÂ Alcala and
Eddie Landin took it away to secure the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.
"In doubles our freshmen started us of with a solid performance— they did the fundamental things well and were able to get the win," Koning said. "It came down to JC (Alcala) and Eddie (Landin), who were clutch at line two. They were down match points and didn't flinch. My hat goes off to them."
Alcala then started things off for the Eagles in singles after an early loss at line five, chalking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No.2 spot.
Rise Lanne downed Simon Pritchard at line one to gather his 12th win at line one this season.
Moya took the reigns and put up a strong performance in the third set to finish off the match in the Eagles' favor, winning 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-0.
"It was a good fight," Moya said. "And my focus helped me in some important points in the beginning of the third set."
"Jose played well," Coach added. "He got a bit unlucky in the second set tie break, but he didn't let that get him down and was able to stay the course in the third set."
This marks his sixth win in eight matches this season, all of which have come from line four previously.
According to Koning, Wednesday's results were a little sweeter thanks to some familiar faces.
"I want to thank the Georgia Southern supporters for coming by; it's good for the guys to see that we have fans in this area."
