STATESBORO, Ga. – To cap off a historic season, Georgia Southern fans, alumni and Athletic Foundation donors helped honor the 2015 Georgia Southern football team at a Football Gala on Sunday.
The Eagles, who won nine games and captured the program's first bowl win, had several players earn recognition from the Sun Belt Conference. All of the award winners and the 2015 senior class members were recognized.
The Sun Belt recognized 12 Eagles after the regular season, and those Eagles received their awards on the stage of Nessmith-Lane Performing Arts Center.
GS had four first-team all-conference selections (Matt Breida, Antonio Glover, Derek Keaton and Darien Foreman), three second-team all-conference selections (Jay Ellison, Andy Kwon and Bernard Dawson), four honorable mentions (Antwione Williams, Ironhead Gallon, Caleb Williams and L.A. Ramsby) and one Newcomer Team selection (Wesley Fields).
The Eagles also had a successful year in the classroom as Matt Dobson and James Dean were both named to the Academic All-District team and Dobson went on to earn first-team Academic All-America accolades. Dobson was also presented with the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award for his work on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Additionally, 28 players were recognized for being named to the 2014-15 Commisioner's List, which goes to those who have a GPA of 3.50 or above during the 2014-15 academic year.
The program also paid special recognition to senior class. The class helped the Eagles make a successful transition to the FBS and played in the program's first bowl ever, a win over Bowling Green in the GoDaddy Bowl.
Football opens the 2016 season on Sept. 3 at home against Savannah State and will host Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Appalachian State as part of a four-game Sun Belt Conference schedule. Season ticket renewals and pre-orders are ongoing and can be purchased at gseagles.com/tickets or by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS. The full 2016 schedule is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
