STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Baseball Head Coach
Rodney Hennon has named his starting rotation for the opening series of the year, a three-game set at Georgia.
Evan Challenger will get the ball for the season opener, reprising his role as Friday night starter for 2016. A pair of freshmen will take to the bump in the final two games with
Chase Cohen getting the nod for Saturday's 1 p.m. game while
Brian Eichhorn will go on Sunday.
Challenger was named Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference after going 5-3 in 2015 on his return from injury. The lefty out of Mount Dora, Fla. ranked second in the Sun Belt with a 2.03 ERA while fanning 58 batters against only 20 walks.
Cohen opens his collegiate career on Saturday afternoon following a standout career at Alpharetta High School. A two-time All-Region selection, Cohen owns the A.H.S. single-game school record with 15 strikeouts in a six-inning game and recorded an 0.38 ERA as a senior.
Eichhorn comes to the Eagles out of Richmond Hill, Ga. where he was an All-State selection by the Georgia Dugout Club. The Region 3-5A North Player of the Year, Eichhorn went 8-1 as a senior at Richmond Hill High School with a 1.52 ERA and 51 strikeouts over 50 innings of work.
The series at Georgia starts on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. with the game to be broadcast on SEC Network + at WatchESPN.com. Sunday's game will also be on the network. The Georgia Southern Sports Network will provide coverage of all three games across network lines.
The 2016 home opener is on Wednesday, Feb. 24, as Georgia Tech ventures off the flats to face the Eagles at J.I. Clements. First pitch for the home opener is 6 p.m. with the game to be broadcast on ESPN3.
