Georgia Southern hosts defending Sun Belt champion Arkansas State Friday and Little Rock Saturday. First serve for both contests is set for 6:30 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. Friday's match is the Eagles' annual Dig Pink Match, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
Georgia Southern has lost its last three league matches, while Arkansas State has won its last six. Little Rock has lost two in a row and is 3-2 in its last five. The Eagles are 1-5 all-time against Arkansas State and lost all three meetings last season without winning a set. Little Rock owns a 4-0 all-time record against GS and won both matches last season.
Already the school's all-time leader in digs, Alex Beecher now has 2,182 career digs, 220 shy of moving into the top-25 in NCAA history. The redshirt senior ranks second in the Sun Belt in digs per set with 4.78 and has 43 career matches with 20-plus digs.
Katie Bange ranks second in the country and first in the Sun Belt with six triple-doubles. All six have featured kills, assists and digs.
The Eagles rank 29th in the country and second in the Sun Belt in aces and aces per set.
Lauren Reichard ranks third in the league in blocks with 101 and fourth in blocks per set with 1.10.
Georgia Southern had to postpone matches against Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina because of inclement weather as a result of Hurricane Matthew that hit the East Coast and Statesboro, which is 55 miles west of Savannah. As a result, the Eagles had a rare 12-day layoff between matches and played Troy in back-to-back contests, both GS wins.
The last time Georgia Southern played the same opponent in back-to-back contests was in 2001, when the Eagles lost 3-2 to Furman at home on the last day of the regular season and topped the Paladins 3-2 in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament. GS went on to win its first SoCon Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. After Saturday's match, GS will finish the regular season with back-to-back matches against Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Georgia State.
