STATESBORO, Ga.- The Georgia Southern track and field team kicks off the indoor season at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday. The meet starts at 9:30 a.m. and will be held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
"We're excited to start this new year off," head coach
Kelly Carter said. "I'm excited to see the young talent that we brought in compete and watch the class that we already have this weekend to see where everyone is at."
For the freshmen, this will be their first collegiate track and field event; however some of them competed in cross country this past fall. The cross country team made its first appearance in the NCAA Regionals this year and looks to build off of that momentum to excel in the indoor and outdoor distance competitions.
Last year at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in May, four Eagles posted top-10 finishes including
Asha Stegall and
Chasin Gladdis who were a part of the 4x100m relay that placed eighth. Stegall will run the 200m and Gladdis is set for the 60m dash at Wake Forest.
For jumps,
Ashleigh Rasheed returns this year, competing in the triple jump and the long jump. She placed 12
th in the triple jump at the conference championship last spring.
"We have a process and a plan put in place to compete at and we're excited to see the first steps of it this weekend at JDL and represent Georgia Southern."
