MOBILE, ALA. – Eagle Nation's invasion of Mobile was evident on Tuesday as Georgia Southern supporters descended on the city to truly paint the town Blue. Tuesday's events included the annual Mayor's Luncheon, the final practice of the season, the Inside Georgia Southern Football Radio Show and a pep rally as rain affected the day.
The Mayor of Mobile, Sandy Stimpson, rolled out the red carpet on Tuesday with the annual GoDaddy Bowl Mayor's Luncheon which was headlined by a speech from legendary broadcaster Brent Musburger who encouraged the teams to play hard, but embrace their opponents after the game in true sportsmanship.
Georgia Southern was represented well with the Southern Pride Marching Band performing their top tunes including the fight song. Cheerleaders and Gus were also in attendance. Interim University President Dr. Jean Bartels and Adrian Peterson spoke on behalf of the University to the assembled crowd.
The team was scheduled to visit Ladd-Peebles Stadium for a walk-through practice. Rain, however, forced the final workout inside to the Mobile Convention Center. Prior to the hour-long practice, representatives from the GoDaddy Bowl presented Interim Head Coach Dell McGee with the Championship Trophy from Monday night's bowling event.
After practice, the team returned to the hotel for a quiet evening, but it was the fans who took over downtown Mobile.
Wintzell's Oyster House hosted this season's final Inside Georgia Southern Football Radio Show as a standing room only crowd watched Chris Blair speak with Dr. Bartels, Athletics Director Tom Kleinlein, Athletics Foundation Director Kevin Bostian and Interim Head Coach Dell McGee.
The season's first Mardi Gras parade was set for Tuesday night, but heavy rains cancelled the event and the fireworks show over the Mobile River. The GoDaddy Bowl Pep Rally, however, went on as scheduled inside the Mobile Convention Center. Marching bands from both teams and cheer squads performed at the event which was well attended by Eagle Nation.
The GoDaddy Bowl will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. (CT)/8 p.m. (ET) on ESPN.
Georgia Southern fans are encouraged to wear blue for the game. Rain is expected for the game with severe weather possible. The National Weather Service's Mobile office has a twitter account where fans can stay up to date with climactic conditions @NWSMobile.
