GSU Players visited 5 local elementary and middle schools to get students ready for Thursday’s game with Robert Morris
STATESBORO, Ga. – Members of the Georgia Southern women's basketball team visited five local elementary and middle schools on Tuesday ahead of their against Robert Morris which is being dubbed Field Trip Day. Close to 1,200 students from the five schools will be attending Thursday's 11 a.m. game between the Eagles and Colonials and the team wanted to make sure that the students felt welcomed and knew a little about their home team.
The five schools that the players visited and that will be sending students to the game include Langston Chapel Elementary, Langston Chapel Middle, Portal Elementary, Mill Creek Elementary and William James Middle.
During the visits, the Georgia Southern student-athletes spent time talking to the students about what it was like being a Division I student-athlete and about their passion for the game of basketball. The Eagle players also answered questions the children had about college as well as growing up playing basketball.
WHAT THE PLAYERS ARE SAYING
"It was really fun listening to the kids and their views on basketball," said freshman guard Ashley Burke. "It was really interesting how a couple said their favorite thing about the game is defense. That's not something that I would expect because defense is very important, it's just not the most popular part of the game. Thursday is going to be really exciting because I'm looking forward to seeing those same students up in the stands cheering us on."
"I grew up in Columbia, S.C. so the University of South Carolina players used to come to my school all the time and I grew up looking up to them," said sophomore forward Alexis Foulks. "It's really cool to now be one of those players that they are looking up to. A lot of them already knew our names and numbers so it's really cool that they already know who we are."
"The big thing about today was telling the kids that we are excited about them coming to support us at the game on Thursday, and we really are," said sophomore guard Abby Hix. "They had a lot of questions about the game and about ourselves. I made sure to tell them that just getting to play the game is really the most fun for me. It's going to be loud on Thursday, but it's going to be awesome. Any time you can have a nearly full gym makes it so much more fun and it will be even better on Thursday because they're kids and they react differently and will really enjoy watching a college game."
