Eagles head to Columbus in March
STATESBORO – For the second straight year, the Georgia Southern rifle team has qualified for the NCAA Rifle Championships as the Eagles were one of eight teams selected to compete in the 2026 Championship.
The national event will take place from March 13-14 inside Ohio State's Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio. Individual and team competition in smallbore is scheduled for Friday, March 13 while air rifle competition will be on Saturday, March 14.
"I'm really proud of the girls and excited for our team to have another chance to compete for a championship," said head coach Soren Butler. "The team has worked to put themselves in a position to win and while we've had moments of doubt, they continued to work through that doubt. I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish in the next couple weeks. Hail Southern!"
Last Saturday's NCAA qualifying score was the last factor determining the field for the 2026 NCAA Rifle Championships. Each team's three score aggregate average – the score based on each team's highest three regular season scores fired at three different locations – was already recorded. Last weekend's qualifier score was added to that average and the teams with the eight highest combined scores qualified for the NCAA Championship.
Georgia Southern's three scores it counts as part of its NCAA Qualifying score are its 4,745 at The Citadel, its 4,744 at home, and its 4,738 fired at the Olympic Training Center. Adding Southern's 4,720 qualifying score, GS's total for NCAA selection was 9,462.33, which seeded the Eagles eighth. Kentucky is seeded first at 9,500.00 with Nebraska second (9495.33), TCU third (9490.33), defending champion West Virginia fourth (9,485.67), Ole Miss fifth (9,483.00), Alaska Fairbanks sixth (9,472.00) and Navy seventh (9,472.00). Seeding are only used for shooter placements as all teams start on equal footing at the event.
Southern is averaging a 2,345.929 in smallbore (7th in the NCAA) and 2,383.000 in air rifle (T-5th in the NCAA) for a season aggregate average of 4728.929 (7th in the NCAA).
