MIDWEEK PREVIEW: Eagles Host Cougars for First of Three Midweek Games

Eagles and Cougars play each Tuesday for the next three weeks

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team turns the page toward a new week, opening this week's action with a midweek game against the College of Charleston Cougars. Action is set to begin from J.I. Clements Stadium on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

Georgia Southern comes into the contest with a 9-10 record after falling two games to one in the Sun Belt opener against Old Dominion. The Eagles were able to salvage the series finale on Sunday, where excellent pitching performances from Ty Fisher and Joey White kept a potent Monarch offense at bay, while Kent Schmidt's first career home run ended up being the difference as the Eagles beat ODU, 2-1. The Cougars come to town with a 12-6 record after taking two games of a three game series against the Wofford Terriers, taking game one but falling in game two before taking the rubber match on Sunday.

Georgia Southern holds a slim lead in the overall series at 38-36. The Cougars swept the two game series last season, which they had not done since 2015. The teams are scheduled to meet three times this season, which they had not done since 2011, when both teams were members of the SoCon. In 2011, the teams actually met six times in total, with the Eagles winning the regular season series. In the SoCon tournament, the teams met to open tournament play, where the Eagles came out victorious. CofC then beat the Eagles on Saturday to force a win or go home situation for both teams, where Southern came out victorious. Southern won the SoCon Championship the next day with a 1-0 victory over Samford.

Georgia Southern currently holds a 140-81 mark against the three Division I teams from Charleston. In addition to the 38-36 mark against the Cougars, Southern is also 54-40 all-time against The Citadel and 48-5 all-time against Charleston Southern.

The Eagles will send out southpaw Jacob Phillips to make his second start of the season, while the Cougars will send out Daniel Brooks to make not only his second start, but his second appearance of the season.
