Women's Tennis Wraps Up ITA Regionals Action

Georgia Southern sent four players to compete in Atlanta in the tournament held at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia Southern women's tennis wrapped up action at the ITA Regionals this weekend, hosted by Georgia Tech. Four Eagles competed in singles and doubles competition on the weekend.

In Thursday's qualifying action, junior Lindsay Tulenko defeated Magdalena Hedrzak of Stetson, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the Round of 16, where she fell to fifth-seeded Sierra Berry of South Florida, 7-6 (6), 6-3. Freshman Nanaka Kijima fell in her singles match, 7-5, 7-6 (3) against FAU's Amber McGinnis, but rebounded to defeat FAU's Maya Shanok, 6-4, 6-0, in a consolation singles match.

In doubles, the duo of Kijima and freshman Ana Tsitavets were edged by Shanok and Millie-Mae Matthews of FAU, 8-7 (6).

Friday's main draw action saw a pair of Eagles lose singles matches to seeded players. Tsitavets lost, 6-0, 6-1, to No. 14-seeded Audrey Boch-Collins of Miami, while Silvia Martinez lost a 6-2, 6-3 to No. 12-seeded Anastasia Lopata of Georgia.

In main draw doubles action, Martinez and Tulenko lost to Emily de Oliveira and Sophie Williams of Florida, 8-7 (4).

The final action of the weekend came in consolation singles as Tsitavets advanced in a walkover against Emma Shelton of Florida, but lost, 7-5, 6-4, against Anna Arkadianou of Florida State, 7-5, 6-4.

"I believe we all had wished we could have found a way to make our way a bit deeper into the ITA draw," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Knowing that this event is perhaps one of the strongest, if not the strongest regional in the nation, allows us to put things into perspective. I believe we had a good deal of quality matches throughout the event and some quality results. Even if those results were not in the win column.

"Being able to shine a light on many of the things that must be focused on between now and the beginning of the season in January is paramount for our continued development," McCaffrey said. "And I am certain we did that. I think all of the ladies likely came away thinking there were moments that they can be pleased with, as well as areas that they can work on.  For us coaches, so much is illuminated in one's game when playing really strong competition. We are excited about putting effort into those areas and putting the work in so that we prepare for our next event at Mercer."
