Preseason publications are high on the Eagles this season.
STATESBORO – Lindy's and Street and Smith's have picked the Georgia Southern men's basketball team third in the Sun Belt in their preseason publications, which are currently on newstands.
Lindy's names redshirt junior Quan Jackson preseason first-team all-league and redshirt senior Ike Smith preseason second-team all-conference. Street and Smith's has just one preseason all-league team, of which Smith is a member, and the magazine names junior transfer Trevion Lamar the league's Top Newcomer.
Preseason publications are high on the Eagles again this season. Athlon Sports picks the Eagles to win the Sun Belt Conference and named Jackson and Smith preseason first-team all-conference. The Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook picked the Eagles second in its Sun Belt Preseason Poll and named Jackson to its preseason all-league team.
GS returns three starters and 10 lettermen, including 68 percent of its scoring and 69 percent of its rebounding, to a team that finished fourth in the country in field goal percentage and 15th in scoring a season ago. Smith, who received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA to compete this season, enters the year ranked 13th on the school's career Division I scoring list. He needs 21 points and eight rebounds to become the fifth Eagle with 1,500 career points and 500 boards.
Jackson, a third-team All-Sun Belt selection a season ago, enters his junior campaign 309 points shy of 1,000 after averaging 14.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and two steals a contest last year. Lamar averaged 18.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals a game at Northern Oklahoma before missing the final 15 games of the season. He was named a second-team national JUCO Super Sophomore in Street & Smith's Preseason Preview.
Georgia Southern reached 20 wins for the third time in five years in 2018-19, posting a 21-12 mark for the second consecutive season. It's the first time GS has won 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons in 30 years.
The Eagles renewed a long-time series with local rival Mercer last season, and the Bears are set to visit Hanner Fieldhouse, along with Radford, which shared the Big South regular-season title. Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina will visit Statesboro for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign as part of home-and-home Sun Belt series as the conference schedule expands to 20 games for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign.
Season tickets for the 2019-20 season start at $100 for general admission seating and $140 for reserved seats. Season tickets in the lower reserved sections (F-J), as well as courtside seats, are already SOLD OUT, but season tickets are still available in the upper reserved sections (7-12) and are just $140/each as well as general admission for just $100/each. Single-game home tickets go on sale on Monday, Oct. 28, and patrons purchasing season tickets before this date will have a broader selection of seats to reserve.
