Two, three, three, seven, 11 – they’re not just prime numbers – they’re part of this week’s “By The Numbers

STATESBORO, Ga. – "By the Numbers" spotlights some of the interesting statistics, rankings and milestones as they relate to the Georgia Southern Football program each week.

Members of the Georgia Southern Football program who have served in our nation's Armed Forces. Eagle defensive end Lennie Richardson enlisted in the U.S. Army after his 2008 season at Georgia Southern and achieved the rank of sergeant. He served as a gunner on the M1A1 tanks and finished his three and a half years of military service at Ft. Benning. Director of Player Development Cliff Yoshida joined the U.S. Marine Corps after his college graduation and attained the rank of captain. He was a platoon and company commander during his five years of military service. He also played at offensive guard for the Quantico Marines Football team.

Junior running back Tray Butler caught three passes – two for touchdowns – for a total of 105 yards. All his numbers last Saturday were career bests – three receptions, two touchdown receptions and 105 receiving yards, including his 58-yard catch for a second-quarter score.

With three interceptions, junior safety Deion Stanley is tied for the Southern Conference lead for interceptions. Stanley had a pick in each of the first three games and returned one for 31 yards against the Red Flash.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Ellison was a perfect 7-7 in passing attempts and completions for 140 yards and two touchdowns against the Bulldogs.

Eleven different unit patches representing the 3rd Infantry Division, 1st Infantry Division, 1st Marine Division, 1st Air Force, USS Missouri, USS Atlanta, 82nd Airborne, Strategic Air Command, Seal Team Six, 1st Cavalry Division and the Georgia National Guard will be worn on the Eagles' uniforms for Military Appreciation Day October 12th. The Georgia Southern coaching staff will also wear patches representing various branches of the Armed Forces.

Georgia Southern and The Citadel have me on 22 previous occasions with the 17-5 series advantage in favor of the Eagles. Ten of those contests have been decided by seven points or less, including the last two meetings in which Georgia Southern won 14-12 in 2011 at Paulson Stadium and the Bulldogs won 23-21 at Johnson Hagood Stadium in 2012.

With his two touchdowns Saturday, Jerick McKinnon moved into the Georgia Southern's career top-10 list for rushing touchdowns, now with 36. McKinnon is tied with Kenny Robinson (1994-97) and Joe Ross (1987-90) for eighth. Tracy Ham is in seventh place with 41.

Longest pass for the Eagles' this year and a career-long mark for both Kevin Ellison, the passer, and Tray Butler, the running back who took it into the endzone for the Eagles in the second quarter.

The last time an Eagle had more than 105 passing yards was in 2010 when J.J. Wilcox had 107 receiving yards in the regular-season finale at Furman.

Senior Jerick McKinnon rushed for a season-best 181 yards last Saturday as both a quarterback and a running back on a team season-high 33 carries. He rushed for 36 yards in four plays to position Georgia Southern for one of its second quarter touchdown drives. McKinnon also set up William Banks' second quarter touchdown with a team-long 44-yard rush and then scored two touchdowns of his own in the fourth quarter.
