Men's Tennis Travels to ITA Southeast Regional Championships

Statesboro, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team returns to the courts on Thursday, October 20 at the 2011 ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Athens, Ga. The five-day singles and doubles individual event is hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and will feature the top players from 19 Division I schools in Georgia and Florida.

The Eagles will field four singles players and two doubles teams at this year's regional championships. Senior Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) will face North Florida's Leo Nahar and freshman Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.) faces Kennesaw State's Gianni Kubin in two 9 a.m. qualifying singles matches Thursday morning.

Sophomore Oliver Webb (London, England) kicks-off first round action for the Eagles Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Florida State's Blake Davis, followed by junior Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands), who will draw a qualifying opponent for his match at 2 p.m.

Garrido and Hoffman will team up for one doubles tandem this weekend and receive a first-round bye. Verdam and Webb make up the second Eagles pair and will face Georgia Tech opponents on Friday at 9 a.m.

Garrido and Hoffman advanced to the finals in A2 doubles two weeks ago at the Elon Invitational and Webb was one half of a tandem that advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships earlier this fall, but will team with Verdam for the first time this season.

"I'm definitely looking forward to Ollie (Webb) and Matt (Verdam) getting a chance to compete together," said Head Coach Nick Zieziula. "They've had a couple of weeks to practice together and I think their games complement each other well."

"We've been working on expanding our playbook for each of our doubles teams and we're looking to implement some of those things this weekend. This tournament will be a good test for us as we continue preparing for the spring."
