Volleyball Opens Home SoCon Schedule Friday

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team plays its first home Southern Conference games of the season this weekend as the Eagles host The Citadel Friday at 6 p.m. and College of Charleston Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles (11-5, 2-0 SoCon) have won four matches in a row and are coming off a 3-0 win at Furman last Saturday. Georgia Southern has started 2-0 in league play for the third time in the 5-year tenure of head coach Chad Callihan.

Senior Moriah Bellissimo is four digs away from 1,000 for her career. She is second on the team in kills and third on the squad in digs this season.

Senior setter Kate Van Dyke was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week after averaging 11.86 assists a set last weekend. She has a 3.76 grade point average in psychology. Van Dyke is 33rd in the country in assists with 11.22 per set.

As a team, GSU ranks 15th in the country and first in the SoCon in digs, averaging 17.71 per set.

The Citadel (2-14, 0-2 SoCon) is 2-4 in its last six and has lost its last three games. The Bulldogs fell 3-0 to College of Charleston at home Tuesday. Jessica Maxwell leads The Citadel in hitting percentage at .294 and has 102 kills.

College of Charleston (9-5, 2-0 SoCon) has won its last three and is coming off the 3-0 win over The Citadel. Darcy Dorton leads the Cougars in kills with 218 and is hitting .194 on the season. Melissa Morello was named SoCon Freshman of the Week after hammering 25 kills to go along with 17 digs at Elon Sept. 22.
