SoCon Indoor Championships Final Meet Results -- Feb. 23-24, 2013

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C
. – Georgia Southern made history at the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with four Eagles in the starting blocks of the 60m Dash final Sunday afternoon. Seniors Ebony Carter and Amber Vaughn, sophomore Jasmine Walker and freshman Alyssa Felton competed Sunday afternoon as it was the first time in the program’s history that four individuals had advanced to the finals in the event and the quartet added 16 points to Georgia Southern’s team total with the individual finishes.

Carter, Walker, Felton and senior Jasmine Billings all captured All-Southern Conference honors, recognizing the top three efforts in each event, this weekend. Felton won the individual title in the Long Jump and Jasmine Walker placed second in the event Saturday while earning spots in the 60m and 200m finals. Carter was recognized for her second-place finish in the 60m and added All-Conference honors witih a third-place finish in the 200m.

“I could not have asked any more of our sprinters this weekend,” said Head Coach Marlo Mincey. “They had a big impact on our scoring – more than 50 percent of our total. I’m also proud of the freshmen who scored this weekend and impacted our total with their performances. We have a lot of young student-athletes and they are beginning to see the areas where we have depth and also see the areas where they will be able to contribute in the future.  We want to continue to develop Georgia Southern as a well-rounded team, develop the individuals we have, and fill our Eagle uniforms with the right student-athletes.”

Carter placed in the 200m by six thousandths of a second, taking third with a time of 25.064, leading three Eagles in that event as Felton finished sixth and Walker in seventh. Freshman Ashleigh Rasheed, who scored two points in the Pentathlon Saturday, took fourth place in the Triple Jump Sunday with her indoor personal best of 11.62m (38’1.50”) for five additional team points. Sophomore Kimberly Thomas fought her way into the finals of the 400m Dash and added a point to Georgia Southern’s team total. In Saturday’s High Jump, Keyanna Harris tied for fourth at 1.62m (5’3.75”) and came away with 4.5 team points.

Billings finished second in the 60m Hurdles with her best time of the season and Lauren Toomer, in her first-ever finals, gave the Eagles another point, for nine total in that event. In the last event of the championships, the Georgia Southern 4X400 Relay team of Deanna Edwards, Cherrelle King, Thomas and Aliya Parker put four more points on the tally.

Western Carolina took the women’s 2013 team title, edging out Appalachian State by 5.5 points, 149 to 143.5.
