Swimming and Diving Opens Season with Win

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern swimming and diving team opened its 2012-13 campaign by winning 12 of 16 events to top Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association opponent College of Charleston 179-118 Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Activity Center.

Elaina Lanson, Kylee Parsons, Amber Juncker and Sara Meisenhelder all won two events to lead the Eagles. Lanson took first in the 50 free (23.74) and 100 free (51.78), swam the freestyle leg on the first-place 200 medley relay squad and anchored the final leg of the 400 free relay team, out-touching the Cougars by .40 of a second.

Parsons won the 200 free (1:56.07) and 500 free (5:07.31) and swam the first leg of the 400 free relay. Juncker won the 1000 free (10:44.87) and 400 IM (4:38.98), while Meisenhelder won both the 3-meter (251.32) and 1-meter (237.07) diving events.

"It was really a very solid meet for us overall and always good to start the season with a win," said Georgia Southern coach Nathan Kellogg. "We were very good in some places, and others need work. Overall, it was a very solid performance and something we can build on."

Kristen Bates won the 100 breast (1:05.10), and Courtney Harrison came in second (1:08.02) as the Eagles swept both breaststroke events. Harrison won the 200 breast (2:26.67) and Megan Ostrom placed second (2:28.13).

Christina Moran swam the backstroke leg of the 200 medley relay and placed second in the 100 back (58.35) and 200 back (2:05.59), while Megan Heller swam the fly leg of the 200 medley relay and took second in the 100 fly (59.81). Moran also swam on the 400 free relay team along with Devan White, Parsons and Lanson.

Cougar backstroker Sarah Boyle set the pool record in the 100 back with a time of 57.96.

The Eagles return to action next Saturday when they take on the Savannah College of Art & Design and Davis & Elkins at home in the RAC. The meet is slated to start at noon.
