Women's Soccer Season Hits Home Stretch
STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer enters the home stretch of the 2011 regular season this weekend with a Thursday afternoon tilt at The Citadel and the home finale against College of Charleston on October 16th at 2 p.m. The Eagles look to continue a two-match winning streak against the Bulldogs and improve on their 4-7-2 overall mark and 2-3-1 conference record.
Sophomore forward Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored Georgia Southern's game-winning goal against Appalachian State on Sunday with just 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation. The goal was her fifth of the season and tied her with Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio) for the team lead in scoring.
In goal for the Eagles, Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M. ) has allowed just one goal in her last three matches between the pipes with the Eagles remaining unbeaten in that stretch.
The weekend starts early for the Eagles with a 4 p.m. kickoff at The Citadel. The Bulldogs play host to senior day at Washington Light Infantry Field. The defenders of the low-country are 4-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in league play with losses in their last two matches. The Citadel has been outscored in the second half, allowing 16 goals in the final 45-minutes to just four goals scored.
The Eagles will honor three seniors prior to Sunday's home finale against College of Charleston. Seniors Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.), Krystin Smith (Acworth, Ga.) and Candace Marshall (Bridgewater, Mass.) make their final appearance at Eagle Field. A pregame ceremony will be held prior to the 2 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
College of Charleston takes on Davidson Thursday night before traveling to Statesboro for the Sunday matinee. The Cougars are third in the SoCon with a 4-1-0 record entering Thursday's match and led by four goals from Sarah Schaidle.
The Eagles wrap-up the 2011 campaign with three-straight road matches at Chattanooga, Samford and Davidson.
