Women's Soccer wins its Conference Opener over Wofford 2-1

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer Team defeated Wofford 2-1 Friday Night at Snyder Field in the Lady Eagles’ conference opener.

The Women’s Soccer Team is now 3-3-2 (1-0-0) on the season and has tied its win mark from last season.

"It was a good win for us," said Head Coach Ashley Hart. "It was good to get our first conference win under our belt. We again had a slow start but played much better in the second half."

Wofford scored in the 21st minute of the match when Rachael Blackburn knocked a shot in from the top of the box following a corner kick. The Lady Eagles rallied in the second half and scored two goals to win the match 2-1 over the Terriers.

Senior Ashley Toussaint (Warner Robbins, Ga.) tied the match at 1-1 early in the second half when she scored her sixth goal of the season off of a pass by Sophomore Michelle Berard (Kennesaw, Ga.).

Toussaint finished the match with four shots on goal, an assist and a goal scored.

Sophomore Jenny Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.) gave the Lady Eagles the lead in the 86th minute of play when she scored off a give and go pass by Toussaint.

"Our midfielders and forwards played well for us by making some dangerous chances," said Coach Hart.

Junior goalkeeper Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.) played well in goal for Georgia Southern. She made seven saves in the match.

"Santos made some big saves for us, and our backs did a good job of stopping their [Wofford] attack in the second half," said Coach Hart.

With today's victory Georgia Southern has tied the all-time series record against Wofford. The record now stands at 7-7-1. The Lady Eagles have for the third time in the series won two straight matches over the Terriers.

The Lady Eagles return to the field in Greenville, S.C. against the Furman Paladins at 2 pm on Sunday.
