Women's Basketball Tops Kent State 71-47
ATLANTA – MiMi DuBose scored a game-high 21 points and dished out four assists, and Georgia Southern held Kent State to 26 percent shooting to notch a 71-47 women's basketball victory over the Golden Flashes Saturday afternoon in the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament in GSU Sports Arena.
DuBose went 5-for-10 from 3-point range and knocked down six of her eight free throws. Jordi Cook scored eight points in 12 minutes off the bench, and four Eagles scored seven points apiece.
Jamie Hutchinson led Kent State (0-5) with 10 points, and Tamzin Barroilhet collected eight points and nine rebounds.
The Eagles (1-2) grinded their way to a 31-22 lead at halftime and pushed the lead into double digits early in the second half. Kent State tried to cut into the lead with full-court pressure, but the Eagles handled it well and wound up shooting 55 percent in the stanza.
"I'm really proud of the way we competed for entire possessions today and proud of the aggressiveness we played with," said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab. "In the second half, we attacked pressure aggressively but under control and looking to make plays for each other."
For the second straight game, Georgia Southern forced 20-plus turnovers and tallied double-digit steals, finishing today's contest with 11.
With GSU leading 37-28 early in the second half, a DuBose triple started a 13-3 run that gave the Eagles a 19-point advantage. Kiki Rawls netted four of her seven points during the stretch, and Danielle Spencer added four. The Eagles pushed a 17-point margin to a 69-43 cushion with 1:58 to play as Cook knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to cap a 13-4 run.
Kent State led 15-11 midway through the first half, but GSU held the Golden Flashes to two field goals over the final 11:03 of the stanza. Meanwhile, a DuBose triple sparked a 13-0 Eagle run that gave GSU a 24-15 lead with 5:27 left in the half.
Kent State cut the lead to six with a free throw by Ashley Evans, but Meredyth Frye, who finished the game with seven points, hit a triple from the wing with 37 seconds left to give the Eagles the nine-point halftime lead.
The Eagles open Southern Conference play at league preseason favorite Davidson next Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest in Belk Arena.
