Drew Lethem Advances in U.S. Amateur Championship

PINEHURST, N.C. – Georgia Southern University senior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, MO/Olathe East/Odessa CC) advanced in the U.S. Amateur Championship, held at the Pinehurst Resort. Lethem will begin match play on Wednesday (Aug. 20).

 

Lethem shot an opening round 71 then followed with a 73 on Tuesday to finish 4-over 144. He was tied for 47th as the top 64 golfers advanced based on stroke play. In fact, there is a 26-player playoff for the final two berths which will be determined early Wednesday morning.

 

The championship runs through the end of the week with the 36-hole final match scheduled for Sunday, August 24th.

 

Fellow senior Jordan Johnstun (Evans/LaGrange) slipped during round two. He was tied for ninth after day one shooting a 1-under 69 but carded a 78 to finish 7-over and tied for 109th, two strokes shy of the cut. Assistant coach Carter Collins carded a 151 (75-76) to finish 11-over. He tied for 209th out of the 312 that advanced out of sectional play from around the country.

 

The U.S. Amateur, the oldest USGA championship, was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. The event, which has no age restriction, is open to those with a Handicap Index of 2.4 or lower. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
