Eagles Fall to Appalachian State in Series Finale, 3-2

BOONE, N.C. - Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) hit her seventh home run of the season on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough for Georgia Southern Softball as the Eagles dropped the finale to Appalachian State, 3-2. The Mountaineers held GSU to five hits on the afternoon as Georgia Southern drops its second game in league play to go to 16-2 in the Southern Conference.

GSU is 31-16 overall while the Mountaineers improve to 18-21 and 8-11 in the SoCon.

"Even though we didn't get the win today, we still accomplished our goal of winning the series," said Head Coach Annie Smith. "Appalachian State is a good team and they got the job done today. We had runners on base in the right situations, but at the end of the day we didn't get the win."

Appalachian's Meghan Smith gave the Mountaineers an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run home run over the fence in centerfield.

The Eagles had no shortage of runners in scoring position in the early innings, moving a runner past second base. Fogle put the Eagles on the board in the third with her seventh home run of the season. The towering shot to center hit the roof of Appalachian's indoor football practice facility. The two-run shot tied the game at 2-2 as Alexa Lewis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) also scampered home on the play.

In the fourth inning, Appalachian's Allie Cashion gave the Mountaineers a 3-2 lead with a home run to centerfield. It was her 14th home run of the season and second in the series.

The Eagles, down to their final strike in the seventh, got hope in the form of a double by Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) off the fence in right. That, however, would be all Georgia Southern would get as Fogle popped out to short, ending the game.

The loss went to Brooke Red (Warner Robins, Ga.), her first career defeat after winning 10 games to start her career. She worked three and a third innings allowing three runs off four hits.

The Eagles travel to Jacksonville on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader which begins at 5 p.m.
