Women's Tennis Downed at UNC Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team fell in its away match against UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans used four singles wins and a sweep of doubles play to take a 5-2 win and improve to 9-4 on the season with an undefeated 4-0 mark in SoCon action. The match was moved to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center due to the threat of inclement weather.
The Eagles (4-11, 1-5 SoCon) got off to a bad start in the match when they fell in all three doubles contests. Kayla Gammie and Annette Ross got things started for the Spartans by downing (Rome, Ga.) and (Atlanta, Ga.) at No. 3 doubles. The Spartans clinched the doubles point when the No. 66 ranked doubles team in the country, Lucy Dougherty and Nitooli Wilkins, defeated (Vigo, Spain) and (Kennesaw, Ga.) at No. 1 doubles, breaking the Eagle duo's two-match winning streak. Devon Sutherland and Alex Whitehead completed the doubles sweep for the Spartans when they won over (St. Augustine, Fla.) and (Norcross, Ga.) at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
The momentum of securing the doubles point aided the Spartans early in singles action. Whitehead and Dougherty defeated (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Williams at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. The match victory was clinched when Wilkins downed Garrido at No. 1 singles by a 6-3, 6-1 score, improving her nearly-perfect singles record to 12-1 on the season. Rios ousted Kitchen at No. 3 singles to give the Spartans their fifth point on the afternoon. The Eagles got on the board with two points when Maffett and (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) prevailed in third-set match tiebreakers at No. 6 and No. 5 singles. Maffett won by a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 score over Sutherland, while Dzuba won, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 10-7, over Stephanie Falcon.
The Eagles will look to get back in the win column when they complete their two-match North Carolina swing on Monday afternoon. A dual with the Elon Phoenix is on tap with first serve slated to begin at 2 p.m.
