Women's Tennis Falls at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team lost its second conference road match in as many days when it fell to Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon, 6-1. The win by the Lady Mocs improves their record to 9-2 on the season and marks their second consecutive in their series with the Eagles after losing nine straight.

The Eagles (4-7, 1-2 SoCon) fell behind early in the match when they dropped the doubles point. Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) and Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) lost at No. 1 doubles to Kaylene Chadwell and Alexa Flynn to give the Lady Mocs the doubles lead. The doubles point was clinched when Emily Hangstefer and Brianna Wishing downed Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Cameron Williams (Rome, Ga.), 8-4, at No. 3 doubles. The sophomore tandem of Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) fought hard but ultimately fell in a tiebreaker to Jenna Nurik and Shaina Singh at No. 2 doubles, marking the first time that the Eagle duo has been defeated on the season.

The Lady Mocs were able to pull away from the Eagles in singles play. Garrido lost her first conference singles contest to Nurik at the No. 1 position while her doubles partner, Kitchen, was also downed at No. 2 singles by Flynn. The Lady Mocs clinched the match victory when Chadwell defeated Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) at No. 3 singles. Singh prevailed over Maffett at No. 5 singles and Claire Mulyadi defeated Alexandra Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.) at No. 6 singles to give the Lady Mocs their six points on the afternoon. Williams prevented the Lady Mocs from sweeping play when she came from behind in thrilling fashion to win at No. 4 singles in a third-set match tiebreaker against Hangstefer, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.

The Eagles will look to rebound when non-conference foe Troy comes to Statesboro for a bout on Thursday at 10 a.m. Conference rivals Appalachian State and Furman will also visit Hanner Tennis Complex next week with matches on Friday and Sunday at noon.
