Eagles Finish Fourth in the Championship

Cullowhee, N.C. - Georgia Southern track and field had a great day Sunday to finish fourth in the SoCon Conference Championship.  The Eagles were impressive across the board as they jumped four spots on day two. Georgia Southern finished behind Samford in third, Western Carolina in second, and conference champion Appalachian State.

"I'm really proud of the way the team competed," said Head Coach Marlo Mincey. "Everybody sees the wins, which is great. But I'm definitely happy about how the entire team performed. We had some people really step up and score some points we didn't expect to get. Looking forward to adding to that depth and keeping it going next season. "

Ebony Carter (Rome, Ga.) was named Most Outstanding Track Performer after the weekend. Carter defended her crown, winning the 100 Meter Dash for the second year in a row. The junior ran an 11.53 to take first place. Carter also finished second in the 200 Meter Dash, running 23.92.

"Ebony had a great outing," said Coach Mincey. "She always feels like she can do more and be better and she went out and showed it today."

Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.) ran 11.72 and Jasmine Walker (Fairburn, Ga.) an 11.82 as they took second and fourth, respectively in the 100 Meter. Walker also placed fifth in the 200 Meter running 24.29.

Jasmine Billings became the 100 Meter Hurdles conference champion on Sunday. The junior ran 13.68 to take first place. Following Billings were sophomore Stephanie Hicks (Trenton, N.J.) and freshman Taylor Wade (Loganville, Ga.) who finished in second and third, respectively. Hicks ran 13.76 and Wade 14.20 as the Eagles swept the event. Taylor Wade ran 1:01.88 to also take second place in the 400 Meter Hurdles.

Jasmine Walker was named to the All-Freshmen Ream for her efforts in the 100 Meter and 200 Meter Dash. Taylor Wade was also named to the All-Freshmen Team for the 100 Meter Hurdles and 400 Meter Hurdles.

"We knew Jasmine was going to do well in the 100. In the Long Jump she was a fierce competitor. She wasn't even ranked in a position to score and stepped up and did great. Then to go out and gets points in the 200 as well was really big. And Taylor had a great weekend. We swept the 100 hurdles. We knew we could do it, but it was up to her to do something big and she did it. I know she wanted first since she was going in with the top 400m Hurdle time. But she ran an incredible race and I'm proud of her effort." Said Mincey on the two freshmen.

Senior Millicent Brooks-Millender (Douglasville, Ga.) jumped her way to fourth place in the Triple Jump. Brooks-Millender jumped 11.43 to place for the Eagles.

Kimberly Thomas (Covington, Ga.) took seventh place in the 400 Meter Dash running 58.07. Raquel Daly (Decatur, Ga.) ran 59.90 to place eighth. Kristiana Towns (Decatur, Ga.) ran 2:27.94 to take eighth in the 800 Meter.

Charnelle Wray (Jamaica, N.Y.) placed fifth in the Shot Put throwing 12.93. Alexis Jacobs (Columbia, S.C.) threw 12.50 to place seventh in the event.

Georgia Southern now looks ahead to the 2012-2013 season. Coach Mincey and the Eagles will begin their mission to improve on a great finish.
