2012-13 ATHLETICS HONOR ROLL (PDF) // PHOTO GALLERY

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Athletics honored its Scholar Athletes of 2012-2013 at the annual awards banquet on Wednesday night, April 24th in the University’s Nessmith-Lane Ballroom.. Men’s Soccer’s Aleksandar Tomic (Sydney, Australia) and Volleyball’s Moriah Bellissimo (Blackstone, Va.) were selected by the University Athletics Committee as the 2013 Georgia Southern Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their outstanding work in the classroom and on the playing field.

Tomic earns the first Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor for the Men’s Soccer team since 2009 when Mark Beville earned the honor. It is also the eighth time since 1985 that a men’s soccer student-athlete has taken the award. Tomic played in 14 matches this season as a team captain from his holding midfield position. He tallied one assist on the season against UNCG in an important 4-1 win at Eagle Field on October 16th. A leader on and off the field, Tomic is slated to graduate this spring with his degree in construction management.

Bellissimo earns the honor for the second-straight season, making her the fifth female student-athlete to repeat as Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A first-team CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American, Bellissimo helped Georgia Southern to a 25-7 overall record and the SoCon South Division title with a 15-1 league record in 2012. The second-team All-SoCon selection was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week and SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week this season when she averaged 2.99 digs, 2.84 kills and 0.28 service aces per set.

Off the court, Bellissimo is involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serving as a camp huddle leader. She also served as President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board for the 2012-13 season. Bellissimo boasts a 4.0 grade point average in nutrition and food science. She plans to attend Georgia State University to pursue a master's degree in nutrition and become a registered dietitian.

At the banquet, Georgia Southern Athletics also honored 11 Scholar-Athletes as nominated by the head coach of each sport. The 2012-13 Georgia Southern Athletics Eagle Honor Roll was introduced with its 128 members, led by 21 student-athletes from the football team. Members of the honor roll had a 3.0 GPA in the Spring and Fall semesters of 2012. The recipients of Scholar-Athlete Endowment Scholarships were also recognized.

Athletics Website Transition Set for July 1

Details

141.165.12.160 — The planned move of the Georgia Southern Athletics website begins the night of Saturday, June 30th, as GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com will launch not only a new look, but will also have a shorter address in GSEagles.com. Both URLs will continue to be active as the Eagles add a new online home.

A static top-level menu will aid in the navigation for all 15 Eagle sports and drop-down menus offer one-click access to news, game schedules, ticket and donor links and social media channels. A second menu bar on the main page and each sport page will highlight features and team-specific information.

More than 6,000 articles and 16,790 images and documents are being transferred to the new site and the complete archives from Sept. 2007-June 2012 will be available in the next few weeks. Enhanced functionality and new features will roll out in preparation for the 2012-13 Georgia Southern sports seasons, including new live video streaming capability and a mobile app.
