Track & Field Competes in Palmetto Classic Friday
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Track & Field team joins more than 10 other schools at the Palmetto Classic this Friday, March 8th, at Park West in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The Citadel and College of Charleston, both members of the Southern Conference, have played host to the now annual outdoor meet. Field events begin with the Hammer and Discus at 12 p.m. and events on the track start at 1 p.m. with the 3,000m Run. Agate and full meet results will be available at http://cfpitiming.com.
“We want to focus on what we do best, even when we see other conference teams, it doesn’t really matter who we are competing against, a conference team, or a non-conference team, we always focus us and what we came to work on,” said Eagle Track and Field Coach Marlo Mincey. “It doesn’t matter to us what teams will be there, we are going to work on what we need to work on.”
The Eagles continue a hard month of training with their second competition, following a two-day meet last weekend right on the heels of Southern Conference Indoor Championships. Solid performances last week in Field events were highlights of the results at the UNF Spring Break Invitational as many of the Track student-athletes raced up from their routine events.
“Our goal is to get more races in and we’ll still race some events that aren’t our primary events, but we are getting into race shape,” Mincey continued. “We are always looking to run fast, but meet management, handling less than ideal weather, this is all part of it, and we want to see our team get prepared and stay mentally tough this month.”
Alyssa Felton and Jasmine Walker will attempt to break the meet record for the Long Jump set by former Eagle Shaunta Hamilton (5.72) in 2011 and Ashleigh Rasheed, Brianna Charles and Taylor Johnson will try and surpass Hamilton’s 12.09m meet record, also set in 2011, in the Triple Jump. Felton and Walker will also lead a contingent of Georgia Southern sprinters in the 100m Dash and 200m Dash.
Both with personal bests in the 200m Dash last weekend, Kimberly Thomas and Cherrelle King will compete again in that event as well as the 400m race. Four Eagles are slated for the 100m Hurdles with Jasmine Billings looking to improve her time and sisters Dana and Deanna Edwards will represent Georgia Southern in the 400m Hurdles.
Handling the Eagles’ distance races, Sara Curry is scheduled for the Mile Run and the 3,000m Run. Jami Joyner will compete with Curry in the Mile Run as well as race in the 800m Run.
Coach Mincey is still working on combinations in both relays with Deanna Edwards leading off with Felton, Camryn Coleman and Aarian Tipton in the 4X100m Relay entry. For the 4X400m Relay “A” team, Amber Vaughn kicks off this meet’s quartet with King, Thomas and Deanna Edwards at anchor. The Eagles’ “B” team features Dana Edwards for the first leg with Walker, Rasheed and Tipton.
Alexis Jacobs and Kelsey Chandler are coming off top-five finishes last week in the Hammer and start the Eagles off with the first event of the meet Friday. Chandler will also throw the Discus while Jacobs is set for the Shot Put.
