Georgia Southern Football Keeps Busy in OffSeason
STATESBORO, Ga. -- One more pre-dawn workout is scheduled tomorrow before members of the Georgia Southern Football team begin the first two of their 15 days of spring practice next week. On Friday at Allen E. Paulson Stadium, the last session will be formatted into a competition with the Eagles breaking into five groups for three drills. The winning group in each of the three tasks: tire flip, three-cone agility drill and screen agility drill, earns a point. The top two groups will face off in a tug of war for the title.
Spring practice begins for the Eagles on the banks of “Beautiful Eagle Creek,” for two days, Wednesday, March 13th and Thursday, March 14th, before resuming after spring break on Tuesday, March 26th. The first scrimmage is planned for the morning of Saturday, March 30th, at Paulson Stadium with the third and final scrimmage, the Blue-White Spring Game, set for Saturday, April 13th at 1 p.m.
ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK TRIP FOR TWO EAGLES
Georgia Southern students will depart for Spring Break next Friday, many headed for a week of leisure at some sunny vacation spot. Sophomore offensive lineman Trevor McBurnett and Eagle swimmer Meg Ostrom are packing sunscreen and shorts, too, but they are joining seven other Georgia Southern students for an alternative spring break trip to Honduras. Their week will be spent working at El Copprome children’s shelter, helping with painting and chores at the facility, reading to the children, and participating in recreational activities.
El Copprome provides care, food and education to orphaned or impoverished children from ages two to 18. The alternative break from March 16-22 is one of several organized by the University’s Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, where students can have an impact on the world through volunteer service.
BACK IN THE ‘BORO FOR PRO DAY
Several Eagles are returning to Statesboro this week in preparation for Georgia Southern’s Pro Day on Friday, March 15th. Pro Day starts at Iron Works with a full battery of measurements and tests before the Eagles head to Allen E. Paulson Stadium for timing in the 40-yard dash, shuttle runs, agility tests and position drills. Representatives from all NFL teams are scheduled to attend.
Eagle fans are invited to watch the field sessions, which will begin at approximately 10 a.m., from the stands at Paulson Stadium. Access to Glenn Bryant Field is reserved for Pro Day participants, team personnel and members of the media only.
COACH MONKEN TO APPEAR IN ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
Eagle Head Football Coach Jeff Monken will be one of the individuals riding on Georgia Southern University’s float in Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day parade Saturday, March 16th. The most spirited parade in the nation, Savannah’s first parade was held in 1813 and this year celebrates with the 189th event. The parade begins at 10:15 a.m. near Forsyth Park and winds through downtown Savannah. Eagle fans who can’t make it to Savannah to enjoy the festivities or watch locally, can view the parade online on any one of several media outlet websites.
