Men’s Basketball Tops Greensboro with Big Night on the Glass

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball took a 66-60 win over UNCG on Wednesday night behind 42 points from the Eagles corps of seniors. C.J. Reed scored a season-high 23 points with nine rebounds while Cameron Baskerville posted his first double-double since 2010 with a career-high 19 points and 11 boards. The regular season ends on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles travel to Davidson, facing the Wildcats at 2 p.m.

“It was a tremendous team effort tonight,” said Head Coach C.Y. Young. “I’m so proud that every time we walk on the court, we find a way to get better. What is important for us is to come together and make a commitment to rebounding. We did a very good job of buying into that and beating them 50-29 on the glass, which is phenomenal.”

Rebounds were the story in the game as Georgia Southern (13-17, 7-10 SoCon) out-rebounded the Spartans 50-29 with a season-high 21 offensive rebounds. The Eagles struggled from the field, shooting just 29.8% from the field, but were 29-of-34 from beyond the arc to take the win.

Marvin Baynham added 10 points with nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Freshman Cleon Roberts was clutch late, making a deuce to help the Eagles in the waning minutes. Georgia Southern’s mark from the free throw line was bolstered by a perfect 14-of-14 performance by Reed and 7-of-8 from Baskerville.

UNCG (8-20, 6-11 SoCon) got 19 points from Trevis Simpson off the bench while Korey Van Dussen was a thorn in the Eagles’ side all night. Van Dussen scored 12 points with three assists from his point guard position.

The Eagles led by just one at the break, 29-28 while shooting 24% from the field. The poor shooting night did not deter Georgia Southern who scored 37 points in the second half while making 16 second half free throws.

Greensboro did not lead in the final 10 minutes of the game, but were able to tie the contest with 4:41 left on the clock. After the lead went back to five points with 1:45 left, Greensboro cut the lead to just two points with 35 seconds on the clock. The Eagles outscored UNCG 9-5 in the final 30 seconds to cement the victory.

The Eagles close the 2012-13 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a trip to face Davidson. That game from Belk Arena starts at 2 p.m. Georgia Southern, now 2-0 when playing on senior day will look to wreck the Wildcats’ senior day on Saturday.
