Track & Field Continues Preparation for Southern Conference Indoor Championships
STATESBORO, Ga. – With a weekend off from competition, the Georgia Southern Track & Field team uses this critical time to prepare for the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships to be held Saturday-Sunday, February 23rd-24th. Twenty-one student-athletes will participate in 16 different events for the Eagles with the chance to compete in five final events Sunday after Saturday’s trials at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Georgia Southern hopes to move up in the final team standings even with top three finishes in 13 of its previous 14 championships.
“We're using this week to not only get physically prepared for championships, but mentally prepared and focused as well,” said Georgia Southern Head Track & Field Coach Marlo Mincey. “We want to focus on ourselves and what we can control right now and that is preparing our bodies and minds for next week.”
The Eagles currently own 20 top-10 rankings on the Southern Conference list including seniors and 2012 event champions Ebony Carter (60m Dash) and Jasmine Billing (60m Hurdles), checking in at 3rd and 5th, respectively. Freshman of the Year for the 2012 Indoor Championships, Jasmine Walker is currently seventh in the 60m Dash and fourth in the Long Jump. With the season’s top performances for Georgia Southern at the Tiger Paw Invitational last weekend, freshmen Keyanna Harris is tied for fourth in the High Jump and Kimberly Thomas is fifth in the 200m Run.
Rainy weather earlier in the week dampened some of the Eagles’ training, but they kept on track with what they needed to accomplish. Clear weather for Thursday’s practice allowed for a full session with Friday spent focusing on quality work with blocks, technique and hurdles sharpening.
