Big Second-Half Run Leads Chattanooga over Women's Basketball
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Taylor Hall scored 16 points and Ashlen Dewart added 14 to lead Chattanooga to a 75-43 Southern Conference women's basketball victory over Georgia Southern Saturday evening in The McKenzie Arena.
MiMi DuBose scored 13 points to lead the Eagles (2-13, 1-5 SoCon), and Meredyth Frye (right) added eight points, five rebounds and two assists.
Hall was 7-of-12 from the floor for the Lady Mocs (11-3, 4-1 SoCon) and had seven rebounds, and Dewart went 6-of-10 from the field. Kylie Lambert contributed eight points and 10 rebounds, while Meghan Downes and Destiny Bramblett each scored eight points.
The Eagles got down by 18 points in the first half, but used an 18-6 run late in the first period and early in the second to cut the margin to eight, at 41-33 with 14:41 remaining. Alexis Sams hit two triples during the run, and DuBose added one. Frye scored five points, and Aiysha Wofford added four.
The Lady Mocs responded with a 27-3 run over the next 11 minutes behind 10 points from Hall to put the game away. The Eagles committed 13 of their 17 second-half turnovers during the stretch.
"I'm proud of the way we closed out the first half and started the second to fight back and cut the deficit," said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab, "but we have to be able to sustain that level of play and not get rattled when a play or two doesn't go our way. We have to maintain our sharpness and our execution, especially against a team as explosive as Chattanooga."
Chattanooga made four of its first seven shots to start the game and opened a 16-5 early lead. The margin would grow to as many as 18 points before Georgia Southern made a mini run at the end of the first half. Frye scored four points in an 8-2 spurt, capping it with a steal and a fast-break layup to cut the lead to 35-23 at the break.
Dewart finished the frame with 12 points as the Mocs shot 48 percent from the field and held GSU to 26 percent. The Eagles shot 50 percent in the second stanza but only had 16 attempts becomes of turnovers.
The Eagles travel to SoCon opponent Samford Monday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. (Eastern) in the Pete Hanna Center.
