Eagles Post Wins in Two Singles and Doubles Flights at Classic
MARIETTA, Ga. - Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) won the Black draw singles and paired with Stephanie Woods (John's Creek, Ga.) to win the Black draw doubles as the Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team completed a successful two days at the Kennesaw Fall Classic at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center.
Garrido defeated Kennesaw State's Alex Apostu 6-4, 6-1 to win the East flight championship match. The junior opened the match on Friday with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Western Carolina's Karen Jimenez and advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jana Hueckingaus of KSU.
Garrido and Woods opened doubles play on Friday with an 8-2 win over Florida A&M's Bethany Holt and Symons Townsend. The duo reached the finals with an 8-4 win over Western Carolina's Stacia Kissell and Sara Ruiz and won the Black draw with a tough 8-5 decision over KSU's Hueckinghaus and Tamara Plocher.
Woods also excelled in singles play and won the Gold draw with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kennesaw State's Tess Lagerkvist on Saturday. Woods reached the finals with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 decision over Western Carolina's Ruiz.
Maffett teamed up with Jordana Klein (Alpharetta, Ga.) to win the Gold draw doubles championship match 8-4 over Florida A&M's Elysia Ortiz and Shantal Blackwood. Maffett and Klein won their opening round match 8-2 over Western Carolina's Nicole Nielly and Bettiol and advanced to the finals with a 9-8 (4) win over Kennesaw State's Apostu and Isabela Castro.
GSU also had a pair of semifinal consolidation match wins by Klein and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.). Klein defeated WCU's Kissell in her opening round match 6-2, 6-3 but fell to Apostu 7-5, 6-0 in the semifinals. Klein faced Hueckinghaus in the Black draw's Northeast flight and won 6-2, 6-3. Kitchen rebounded after dropping her first two matches to win 6-0, 7-5 over FAMU's Symons Townsend 6-0, 7-5 in the Gold draw Northwest final.
The women's tennis team wraps up the fall season at the Augusta Challenge. The three-day tournament starts Friday Nov. 2 and runs through Sunday.
