Eagle Golf Goes Back-To Back, Wins ODU/OBX Invitational

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Four Eagles carded under-par rounds as the Georgia Southern golf team shot a combined 11-under total of 277 in the third round to win the Old Dominion Outer Banks Invitational at the Kilmaric Golf Club Tuesday.

It was the second consecutive tournament win for Georgia Southern, the first time the Eagles have done that since 1982, and today's team score ties for the fifth-lowest round in school history.

Scott Wolfes won the individual title after topping Radford's Weston Eklund in a one-hole playoff. The sophomore carded four birdies and two bogeys to finish with a 2-under 70 today. He finished the tournament 9-under, his best three-round total as an Eagle, to win his second individual title this season.

The Eagles went lower each day of the tournament to finish the event with a 10-under par total of 854 as a team. That mark ties for the 14th lowest three-round team score at Georgia Southern.

"We had another great team win this week at the Outer Banks," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We challenged the team to go out and play our best round of the week, and they responded. We had a great final round today."

Charlie Martin birdied three of the first five holes and played the back nine at 2-under to post a 69. The sophomore finished the tournament in fourth place at 4-under, and the only blemish on his third-round card was a double bogey on the par-5 fourth hole. It is his second top-5 finish this season.

Will Evans bogeyed the first hole but took off from there, playing the remaining 17 at 5-under to finish the day with a team-best 68, one off his career low. The junior tied for 27th with a total of 222 (+6).

Hayden Anderson got off to a great start by carding birdies on three of the first five holes. The junior had a little trouble going into the turn with bogeys on seven and nine and a double bogey on eight, but he was flawless on the back nine with birdies on 12, 16 and 18 and pars the rest of the way for a 70. He tied for 10th, his second straight top-10 finish, with a 217 (+1).

Matt Mierzejewski posted a 75 today and really had just two trouble holes with double bogeys on seven and 17. He birdied holes three, four, 15 and 18.

The Eagles won the tournament by 12 strokes over Richmond, which stormed up the leaderboard with a 280 today. Old Dominion was third (868), Radford finished fourth (869) and George Mason took fifth (875).

The Eagles finish off the fall season at the Warrior Wave Invitational in Hawaii Nov. 5-7.
