Georgia Southern Golf Squad Heads to AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern golf team will compete in the second annual AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic, hosted by Georgia State, Monday and Tuesday at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth. The 54-hole event brings together some of the top teams in the Southeast at one of the premier courses in metro Atlanta.
The field of 15 teams and 88 players will include three top-50 squads in the latest Golfweek rankings, along with eight teams ranked in the top 100. Among those teams, nine players are ranked in the top 100.
Joining the Eagles and host Panthers in the tournament will be Georgia, Chattanooga, Furman, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Mercer, UNC Greensboro, Old Dominion, South Carolina, Towson, USC Aiken, VCU, Winthrop and Wisconsin.
Scott Wolfes, Charlie Martin, Matt Mierzejewski, Will Evans and Hayden Anderson (right) make up the GSU quintet competing this weekend.
"We have had a couple weeks off to practice and have worked hard on getting ready for our final three events of the fall," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "The team had a great qualifier for this event with a highly-contested finish to see who would head to Atlanta. The last few weeks have started to show the depth of this young team as we will leave some good players at home and take a strong group with us to the tournament."
Wolfes leads the Eagles with a 72 scoring average over six rounds of action and is coming off consecutive top-8 finishes. Martin averages 74.83 strokes a round and is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship three weeks ago. The sophomore tied for 19th at the event last year after shooting a 221, including a 69 in the second round.
Mierzejewski makes his season debut for the Eagles after posting a 76 scoring average as a freshman. Anderson has competed in both events in the 2012-13 season, while Evans will play in his second tournament of the campaign. Mierzejewski and Anderson competed in the tournament last season, and both shot 228.
Following a practice round Sunday morning and a College-Am benefiting the tournament in the afternoon, teams will play 36 holes Monday followed by the final 18 holes Tuesday. The format will be an 8 a.m. shotgun Monday, with tee times starting at 8 a.m. off the first and 10th tees Tuesday.
