STATESBORO, Ga. -
After an off week, the 10th-ranked Georgia Southern Football team returns to Allen E. Paulson Stadium for their home Southern Conference opener against Elon at 6 p.m. Saturday will be High School Band and GSU Faculty and Staff day. All Eagle faculty and staff members can purchase up to four tickets for $17 each.

Georgia Southern (1-1, 0-1) returns home after a 23-21 loss to The Citadel in the SoCon opener in Charleston, S.C. The Eagles look to extend the second-longest active home winning streak in the FCS to 12 games and are seeking their first conference win of the season Saturday. GSU is 7-1 all-time in the Monken era after a loss and is 9-3 all-time against Elon (2-1, 0-0).

The Phoenix defeated West Virginia State 48-14 over the weekend without Head Coach Jason Swepson, who was hospitalized Friday. Swepson was released from a Raleigh hospital on Sunday, but it is unclear if he will coach this weekend. Defensive Coordinator Ed Pinkham served as interim coach this past Saturday.

Regardless, Elon remains one of the league's best passing teams and will bring with them All-American wide receiver Aaron Mellette, who leads the SoCon with three receiving touchdowns. Quarterback Thomas Wilson is off to a great start to the year with a SoCon-best six passing touchdowns.

The Phoenix will play their first conference game of the season against the Eagles. Elon opened the season with a 62-0 loss at North Carolina but rebounded to beat N.C. Central 34-14 in their home opener before winning over the weekend against West Virginia State.

Georgia Southern's rushing offense, which ranks second in the SoCon, is led by sophomore quarterback Ezayi Youyoute and Dominique Swope. The duo has both rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown in two-straight games. Swope has also scored a touchdown in three-straight games dating back to last season's loss to North Dakota State in the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs.

The Eagles won 41-14 at Rhodes Stadium a year ago behind a career-high three touchdown passes from quarterback Jaybo Shaw. The game was also the first career start for eventual SoCon Co-Freshman of the Year Dominique Swope, who rushed for 74 yards and combined for two touchdowns.
