Men’s Soccer Hosts North Florida and Mercer This Weekend
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern’s Men’s Soccer returns to Eagle Field for the 2012 Home Opening Weekend against North Florida and Mercer. The Eagles, 2-1-0 on the year, host North Florida on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. while facing Mercer on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. Both matches can be seen on GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com by clicking on the “Watch and Listen” button on the homepage.
The Eagles took a pair of wins last weekend against Winthrop and Gardner-Webb with Witt Carlisle scoring a pair of goals on the trip. Against Winthrop, GSU survived a pair of equalizers to post a 3-2 win over the Eagles. In the Sunday finale of the Big South/SoCon Challenge, GSU took a 2-0 win over Gardner-Webb to win the tournament as Carlisle was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Joe Hughes, Drew Ruggles and Jack Falle.
North Florida takes its 2-2-0 record on the road for the first time this weekend with a trip to Statesboro. The Ospreys have wins this year over Siena (4-2) and Florida Atlantic (2-0), but dropped losses to Georgia State (1-3) and Florida International (1-2). Last year, Georgia Southern thrashed UNF, 5-0 in the 2011 season opener.
Mercer opened the year with a pair of losses at UAB (1-2) and NC State (1-2) before responding with results against Nebraska-Omaha (2-0) and Hartwick (2-2) in the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic. On Saturday, the Bears host Presbyterian College before heading down I-16 to face the Eagles. GSU fell 1-0 to Mercer last year, but lead the all-time series 23-20.
Following the two home matches, GSU is back on the road for the next seven matches. GSU’s next home game is against Elon on October 12th from Eagle Field. Next Friday, the Eagles travel to face Georgia State starting at 4 p.m.
