Offense Rebounds in Final Scrimmage

STATESBORO, Ga. - Ezayi Youyoute combined for nearly 100 yards of total offense as the Georgia Southern offense outscored 21 points to the defense's seven in the final scrimmage of fall camp.

Youyoute opened the scoring with a 59-yard rushing touchdown and carried the ball 11 times for 81 yards. The sophomore quarterback also completed one pass to Mitchell Williford for six yards. Fellow quarterback Jerick McKinnon carried the ball 15 times for 34 yards, while completing two passes for 15 yards.

“There was some good and bad on both sides,” said Head Coach Jeff Monken after the final day of fall camp. “You hope for a balance. I thought the offense did some good things today and made some big plays. There will be a lot of good tape for us to learn from.”

Freshman B-Back James Dean made the most of his three carries late in the scrimmage and broke free for a 50-yard rush before punching it in from two yards out for the offense's second touchdown. Fellow B-Back William Banks carried the ball 12 times for 39 yards, while Seon Jones added 16 yards on eight carries.

“He has had a good camp. He is a hard working kid and runs hard,” stated Monken about Dean. “He is a determined kid.”

After Valdon Cooper blocked Alex Hanks' field goal attempt, the defense's Emmanuel Orange intercepted a pitch from freshman quarterback Kevin Ellison and returned it 28-yards for a score.

Russell DeMasi completed a 20-yard pass minutes later to Tray Butler, who had a second touchdown grab overturned by an offensive pass interference penalty, for the scrimmage's final score.

Monken added his thoughts on the fall camp as a whole, “I think our kids worked hard and improved a tremendous amount from the first day. I think we got better as a football team.”
