Eagles Excel in Summer Action

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Eagles have achieved success over the summer of 2012 in a number of different events across the globe. Close to home, rising sophomore Andrew Dromsky and Carson Jones have played well on the ITA Summer Circuit. Oliver Webb played the Essex Open in England and incoming freshman Rafael Racy played in the Pelotas Open Qualifying round in Brazil.

Dromsky has produced a strong result in his first outing of the summer, going to the quarterfinals of the ITA Athens Tournament, winning a pair of matches. He defeated Wofford’s Walker Heffron 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 32 before downing Michael Kay 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (11). In the quarterfinals, Dromsky faced Charlotte’s Forest Edwards, falling 6-1, 7-5.

At the Tuscaloosa ITA Tournament, Dromsky bested Mississippi College’s Matthew Martin 6-2, 6-0 before taking a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 2 seeded Casey Kay from UGA. Dromsky’s big run continued with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alabama’s Carlos Taborga to reach the semifinals. Against Cornell’s Alex Sidney in the semis, Dromsky won the opening set 6-4 before dropping the second set 6-1. In the tiebreak, Dromsky fell 10-8 to the eventual tournament champion.

With the results, Dromsky enters the final ITA Summer Circuit Southeast regional at Florida on July 26-28 tied for fourth overall with 35 points. The winner of the regional points standings earns an automatic berth in the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships.

Jones reached the doubles semifinals in the Tuscaloosa tournament, playing alongside training partner Becker O’Shauhnessy, who will play at Alabama this fall. The pair won their opener 8-3 and took the quarterfinal victory 8-6. In the semifinals, they fell 9-7 to the eventual champions Vikram Hundal (Georgia Tech) and Nathan Rakitt (Georgia Tech).

On the singles side in Tuscaloosa, Jones won his opener over Evan Stack from Boston College, 5-7, 6-0, 10-3 before falling to Alex Sidney 6-1, 6-2.

Across the pond, Webb has been playing in the Essex Open Tennis Championships. He took a bye through to the round of 32, defeating Robert Heaton easily, 6-1, 6-0. On Tuesday afternoon, Webb faced top-seeded Matthew Pearce, falling 6-3, 6-0 on the lawns of the Billericay Lawn Tennis Club in Essex.

Racy made a bid to qualify for the ITF Futures Pelotas Open in Brazil. He reached main doubles draw, falling in the first round 6-1, 6-2. In singles, Racy won his opening match in the qualifying round and was one win away from a berth in the main draw, but fell 6-1, 6-1 to Felipe Frias, who advanced to the main draw.

The Eagles return to Statesboro late in August for the opening of the 2012-13 academic year.
