President Keel delivered a welcome address emphasizing the Eagles’ success in both the classroom and court. Keel touched on Georgia Southern’s rich traditions promoting everyone to build on the future. Emphasizing the new strategic plan for the University, Keel addressed three strategic themes: promoting academic excellence; increasing research and creativity; and enhancing student success.
Highlighting the Eagles’ success in the classroom, Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Chris Geyerman congratulated the golf, men’s tennis, softball, volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s tennis and swimming and diving teams for all carrying a cumulative GPA of above 3.00 for the 2009-10 academic year. Geyerman then presented trophies to the top men’s and women’s teams based on academic performance during the 2009-10 year. Women’s Swimming & Diving earned the highest women’s GPA with a 3.40, while the men’s golf team represented the men’s sports with a 3.47.
Senior Woman Administrator Cathy Beene introduced the officers and members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board, recognizing president Caroline Bevillard (swimming & diving), vice president Ali Beavers (women’s tennis), secretary Lauren Claybaugh (volleyball) and treasurer Brandavious Mann (football). Beene continued by announcing each team’s representatives of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board.
Officially ushering in the new athletic year and closing out the event, Director of Athletics Sam Baker took the time to welcome each team, coach and support staff member. Baker welcomed all freshmen and transfer student-athletes, while recognizing those beginning their last year of competition.
“Stay focused, play hard and keep the will to win,” stated Baker who closed convocation charging each student-athlete to strive to be a true student-athlete, by working hard in the classroom and performing well on the field.
